Boomers like the idea that we are not a burden but an asset

Comment: I’ve been feeling old this week. I’m at that age when each few days seems to bring news of some past or present friend or colleague passing away. Age may be “just a number” but numbers are remorseless. You never know whether or when you will be contributing to the mean or the average of the count.

The feeling was enhanced by what I was reading. Sebastian Faulks’ new novel Farewell to Eden is reflective of a life marked by historic and personal events in which the central figure seems almost an observer even as life unwinds in a surprising manner. The story centres around post World War 1 Palestine and lives marked by war as they unwind over decades. Faulks’ consummate story-telling draws readers into their own inner journeys.
