Legendary Pictures is pulling out all the stops for its Street Fighter movie adaptation by gathering the video game’s most iconic characters, including one of the franchise’s biggest villains. The jury is still out on whether the film jumped the gun with that massive reveal or if it is laying the groundwork for a future storyline. Either way, director Kitao Sakurai fueled the hype by directly addressing the prospects of a sequel.
The villain in question is Akuma, who briefly stole the spotlight in the promotional teasers. Secretly debuted in Super Street Fighter II Turbo as an alternative final boss, Akuma’s presence in the upcoming movie pushes its storyline beyond Shadaloo and deep into broader Street Fighter lore. With two big bads slated to appear in the film, it’s either setting up something bigger or attempting to cover as much ground as possible. Speaking with MovieWeb, Sakurai confirmed there’s so much untapped potential they’re eager to explore in a sequel.
“It’s something that we’re thinking about and developing. I don’t want to say anything that locks us in. It also kind of depends on how people react to this one, and whether they, you know, support this vision of the story. We definitely have a lot of ideas, and we’re writing currently, but you know, I wouldn’t want to make any promises one way or the other about what exactly we’re gonna do.”
Based on the trailers, Street Fighter has been largely embraced for its campiness, nostalgia, and game-accurate adaptation of the characters’ movesets. It has also drawn heavy comparisons to the 1994 live-action movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, which famously abandoned the dark source material in favor of a cheesy spy thriller plot. By contrast, the latest version is far more faithful to the lore, capturing the spirit of the video games by featuring characters in head-to-head competitions.
The film’s premise is heavily based on the Street Fighter II games, including 1991’s The World Warrior, which revolves around the World Warrior Tournament, the core eight playable characters (Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Blanka, Zangief, Dhalsim, and E. Honda), and Shadaloo villains Vega, Balrog, and M. Bison. The ensemble also includes Fighting Street‘s Joe, The New Challengers‘ Cammy, and the Alpha prequel trilogy’s Juli, Dan, and Akuma. The roster still lacks many combatants, including core villain Sagat, who is notably absent from the promotional lineup.
Street Fighter releases during the golden age of video game movies — breakout hits like Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, Five Nights at Freddy’s, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, A Minecraft Movie, and Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil proved the medium is ripe for feature-length adaptations, save for a handful of letdowns: Borderlands, Return to Silent Hill, Until Dawn, and Mortal Kombat II failed to meet expectations. Sakurai confirmed that while a Street Fighter sequel is on the table, the green light ultimately depends on how well the film performs in theaters.
