National’s Mt Roskill MP says his election signage has been deliberately set on fire, after already being vandalised.

“This is not harmless behaviour. It is dangerous, reckless and completely unacceptable,” Cheung wrote on social media, sharing a picture of the signage on fire.

“Deliberately setting fire to signage can put people, property and the wider community at serious risk.

“You may disagree with our views. You may disagree with our candidates. But there is absolutely no place for vandalism, intimidation or criminal behaviour in our democracy,” he said.

The incident had been reported to police, Cheung added. His team would assist authorities in any way possible with their investigation, he said.

“And let me be clear: this behaviour will not stop people from voting. If anything, it will strengthen the resolve of our supporters to come out, participate and stand up against this kind of behaviour.

“Our democracy is not a target. Our community will not be intimidated. And this behaviour will not silence us.”
