Workers are missing out on a day off this year, but Germany’s Unity Day holiday still offers plenty to do. From official celebrations in Bremen to cultural events in Berlin and open mosques around the country, here’s what to expect on October 3rd.
Germany’s national holiday falls on a Saturday this year, which means most people will miss out on an extra day off work and still face the usual public-holiday shop closures. But that does not mean October 3rd will pass unnoticed.
The Day of German Reunification, or Tag der deutschen Einheit, marks the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990. Each year on the third day of October, celebrations of the event across the country range from major festivals and historical exhibitions to harvest celebrations and open days.
The biggest celebrations this year are in Bremen, while Berlin offers everything from reunification-themed exhibitions to club culture events. Elsewhere, smaller communities are putting their own spin on the day, and around 1,300 mosques across Germany will once again open their doors to visitors.

Bremen takes centre stage
If there’s one place to be for German Unification Day in 2026, it is Bremen.
The city is hosting the official national celebrations, a role that rotates annually between the federal states.
Over three days, from October 2nd to 4th, Bremen’s city centre and waterfront are to be transformed into a giant public festival expected to attract around 400,000 visitors.

One of the main attractions will be the Ländermeile, where all 16 German states will present their cultures, traditions and regional specialities. For visitors, this offers the rare chance to sample a little bit of the whole country in a single afternoon.
Much of the programme is free and outdoors. Alongside the Ländermeile, visitors can wander between stages hosting concerts, theatre performances, debates, readings and family activities.
Big-name acts including Die Fantastischen Vier, MiA., ClockClock and Kamrad are scheduled to appear across the weekend. Public transport within the local VBN network will be free for festival-goers throughout the event.
Berlin mixes history, democracy and club culture
As the capital of the reunited country, there are always events to mark German Unification Day in Berlin – although, at first glance, not all of them have an obvious connection to the holiday.
For those interested in Germany’s history, the German History Museum will once again offer free admission on October 3rd. The Berlin Wall Memorial is also hosting a special event designed to help visitors explore the history of division and reunification through personal stories and sensory experiences.

Berlin’s famous nightlife scene is also using the holiday as a moment for reflection. The annual Tage der Clubkultur festival takes place around German Unification Day, while Kraftwerk Berlin is opening an exhibition titled “Dance Floors of Reunification“, exploring the club culture that emerged after the fall of the Wall and helped shape the city’s international reputation.
Not every event over the holiday weekend is tied directly to reunification. Visitors can also browse a giant flea market and design fair at the Karlshorst trotting track, enjoy the Schöneberg Pumpkin Festival or attend the MUBI Film Festival – which is returning to the city with a programme of screenings and discussions.

Anyone expecting German Unification Day to resemble the Fourth of July in the United States or Bastille Day in France would be let down.
While Germany’s national holiday is important politically and historically, it’s celebrations tend be more low-key. For many Germans, October 3rd is treated as a relatively quiet public holiday, and a chance to spend time with family or enjoy an autumn outing.
You may come across local, seasonal events over the weekend. Harvest markets, pumpkin festivals, flea markets and community celebrations are common.

In places close to the former East-West border, there are more historical exhibitions, guided walks and discussions about reunification to be found.
In Dresden, organisations including the Frauenkirche Foundation are hosting a “Market of Democracy” featuring information stands, cultural performances and discussions focused on democratic participation and social cohesion. At the same time, neighbouring Freital will host its first-ever Queer Pride march on Saturday.
Meanwhile in Munich, the Allianz Arena will once again be illuminated in black, red and gold, the colours of the German flag.
Visit one of Germany’s 1,300 mosques
Another distinct tradition associated with October 3rd in Germany is the Day of Open Mosques (Tag der offenen Moschee).
Held every year on German Unification Day, the initiative sees around 1,300 mosques across Germany open their doors to visitors. Guests can typically take guided tours, attend talks, view exhibitions and ask questions about Islam and everyday community life.
The event was created to encourage dialogue and mutual understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims. For many visitors, it can offer an opportunity to step inside a mosque for the first time and have informal conversations with community members.
