The scrub fire near Queenstown has been fully contained, with firefighters demobilised on Thursday evening.

Fire and Emergency District Commander Blair Kiely said the fireground was being handed back to landowners, after an assessment of conditions and expected weather.

“Some areas may continue to smoulder over the next few days and people may notice smoke,” he said.

The exclusion zone for vessels near the Walter Peak shoreline has also been lifted.

A further aerial inspection of the fireground will be carried out on Monday.

He said a senior specialist fire investigator will probe the cause and origin of the fire, including any connection to a controlled burn carried out at Walter Peak High Country Farm on 30 September.
